POV 3 – The wet one

Division 1

Not a complete shock as I said last week Ewarts could cause an upset this season but still a surprise to many to see Ewarts travel to Ballymena and split the points. It will be interesting to see if they can build on that result and set their sights on midtable. Dunbarton and Old Bleach got their seasons off to good starts with 7 and 6 point wins respectively. Pickie are the early pace setters in Division 1 with 2 wins from 2 meanwhile at the bottom Willowfield, Ards and Transport are yet to get a win from their 2 matches. Belmont against Larne fell to the weather.

Old Bleach v Ballymena

Ards v Ulster Transport

Willowfield vs Dunbarton

Larne v Pickie

Ewarts v Belmont

Old Bleach v Ballymena is the pick of the fixtures this week. No-one wins titles in May but a heavy loss for one could leave that team with a lot of ground to make up even this early. Ards v Transport is a must win for both teams with points hard to come by at the bottom. I think Ards will make home advantage count. Willowfield entertain Dunbarton and must make home advantage count. The Gilford crew will be travelling in hope of at least 6 points. Larne host early leaders Pickie and this match will show who is the more likely to challenge the top 4. Ewarts can prove last Saturday wasn’t a flash in the pan with the visit of Belmont.

Division 2

All matches survived the weather even though NICS had an inspection at 12.30. They were glad they went ahead with the match as they lifted 7 off visiting Castleton. Mossley travelled to Cliftonville and ran out convincing 32 shots winners and left with 6 points. Comber’s early struggles continued with Falls picking up 6. Ballywalter joined Mossley and Falls as the only 3 teams with 2 wins from 2 with their 6 point win over Hilden. Forth River won this week’s North Belfast derby by taking all 7 points off visiting Salisbury.

Hilden v Forth River

Falls v Ballywalter

Mossley v Comber

Castleton v Cliftonville

Salisbury v NICS

Forth River travel to Hilden this week and I can’t call it. Falls host Ballywalter in a clash at the top with the winner opening up a gap on the loser. Mossley will be aiming for all 7 against struggling Comber and possibly top spot after this round of fixtures. Cliftonville travel to Castleton in this week’s North Belfast derby and both teams will be looking to break their duck. NICS go to Salisbury and will need a win to stay in touch at the top.

Division 3

Only 2 matches survived the weather and Knock will wish theirs hadn’t as they failed to get a point at PSNI. Cavehill fared slightly better as they left Saintfield with 1.

Knock v Shorts

Gallaher v PSNI

Cavehill v Shaftesbury

Ballymena B v Saintfield

North Belfast v Belmont B

Knock will be hoping this home match will be the time for at least a rink to win a point when Shorts make the short trip. PSNI will travel to Gallaher in hope of a second consecutive win while Shaftesbury are looking for the same when they go to Cavehill. Saintfield have won both matches so far so their visit represents a serious test for Ballymena B. North Belfast hosting Belmont B sees 2 teams both seeking their first win.

Division 4

Downpatprick recorded an emphatic 39 shot 7 point win against Belmont C and are the early division leaders as a result. Dunbarton travelled to Falls as both teams started their season properly and Dunbarton left with 6.5 points. Old Bleach hosted Malone and took 5 points to start their campaign while Ballymena C took 6 away Belfast.

Ballymena C v Downpatrick

Malone v Falls B

Dunbarton B v Willowfield B

Pickie B v Larne B

Belmont C v Belfast

Old Bleach B have a bye

The early season leaders Downpatrick travel to the defending champions Ballymena C in this week’s big clash. Malone host Falls B and both will want to get their first win. Dunbarton and Willowfield are both unbeaten but I think only the Gilford men remain so after this round of fixtures. Pickie will be hoping just to complete a match at this stage and will look forward to the visit of Larne. Belmont C and Belfast are both played 2 lost 2 so someone needs to finally win!

Division 5

The division of have and have nots continues with Ards, Mossley, Hilden and Ewarts all recording their second wins, though Ards was by default as unfortunately Comber couldn’t field a team. I can’t add much about the size of the wins as I didn’t receive any shot scores for any of the matches.

Forth River B v Mossley B

Ulster Transport B v Ards

Comber B v Cavehill B

Cliftonville B v A Foundry

Belmont D v Ewarts B

Shaftesbury B v Hilden B

Mossley, Ards, Hilden and Ewarts will all be looking to make it 3 from 3 but all face the challenge of winning on the road. Cliftonville will be looking to make home advantage count against Albert Foundry while Comber will be hoping to field a team with Cavehill due to visit them.

PG Cup

Ards A v Forth River A

Cavehill A v Cliftonville A

Belmont B v Ballymena A

Comber A v Dunbarton A

Knock v Ballywalter

Shaftesbury A v Shorts

U Transport A v Willowfield A

PSNI V Hilden A

Ewarts A v Castleton

Mossley A v Pickie A

Salisbury v North Belfast

NICS v Belmont A

With several ties involving clubs in different divisions on paper Ards, Cliftonville, Ballymena A, Dunbarton, Ballywalter, Hilden, Ewarts, Salisbury and Belmont will all be expected to be in the next round. Shaftesbury against Shorts pits 2 teams from the top of Division 3 against each other while U Transport host Willowfield. Both matches are hard to call but I’ll go with home advantage. That leaves Mossley v Pickie. Both teams are flying high in the league with 2 wins each and this could go either way, but I think Pickie will win a close one.

Belmont v NICS

City of Derry v Cavehill

Coleraine v Forth River

Divis v Falls

Ewarts v Pickie

Larne v Donaghadee

Mossley v Portglenone

Old Bleach v Clarendon

Portrush v Ards

U Transport v Lisnagarvey

Willowfield v Ballymena

Byes for Albert Foundry and Dunbarton

Falls and NICS will be hoping for upsets in local derbies away from home but both face tough challenges against Divis and Belmont respectively. Cavehill, Forth River and Ards face tough away trips to Provincial clubs. Ewarts host Pickie while Willowfield entertain Ballymena in the 2 all PG Division 1 ties. The first is too close to call but it will be a shock if Ballymena A don’t progress. In the remaining ties Larne, Mossley, Old Bleach and U Transport will all be glad to have home advantage and the first 3 should win but Transport will need to be at their best against Lisnagarvey to proceed.

Ballymena C v Willowfield

Carrickfergus v Belmont C

Castle v Pickie

Cavehill v Falls

City of Derry v Ewarts

Comber v Portadown

Cookstown v Ards

Dunbarton v Crumlin

Hilden v Musgrave

Letterkenny v Belmont D

Lisnagarvey v Mossley

U Transport v Portstewart

Whitehead v Larne

Byes for Old Bleach and Forth River

In the all PG ties I think Falls overcome Cavehill, Ballymena C should make home advantage count against Willowfield. Dunbarton should win at home and I don’t know if Comber can field a team against Portadown. Transport need to pick up a win eventually and hopefully it comes this Saturday. Hilden have started the season well and will want that to continue when Musgrave visit. A lot of the rest of the ties are trips away into the unknown and any away win in the cup is hard to come by.

Thought for the week

We must all be bonkers standing out in the rain for over 3 hours! Hopefully the weather picks up a bit soon.
