It was Cup joy for Larne this evening when they took the Midweek trophy after a well contested final with Mossley at Ballymena BC.
They were always in control building upon an early 11 shot advantage to eventually win by 91-63.
In the early stages P Craig (Larne) was doing most of the damage and after 4 ends had opened up a 7-1 lead against S Salters. This lead was extended to 15-3 by the halfway mark and with D McRandall also 11-3 up against G Kearney, Larne were building a commanding advantage.
On rinks 1 and 2 the contest was always close, with there never being more than a few shots between the teams. By 14 ends D Thompson (Mossley) was only 11-12 down to B Houston and D Kerr (Mossley) trailed G McKinley 11-14. S Salters (Mossley) had also come back into his game and now was only 3 behind.
However the overall lead was still held by Larne and had actually been extended to 29 thanks to David McRandall’s rink having moved to 27-5.
Try as they might Mossley just couldn’t bridge this gap and Larne held firm in the run in to finish 28 up.
B Houston 16 – 16. D Thompson
G McKinley 23-18 D Kerr
D McRandall 32-11 G Kearney
P Craig. 20-18. S Salters
So the first cup goes to the east coast and the focus turns to the Irish Cup Semi Finals to be held this weekend.
