It was Mossley who took the Midweek Cup Final, sponsored by Coleman Brothers, at Ballymena BC this evening with a 82-72 shot victory over Falls.
In a great game which saw both teams dominate in spells it was Falls who started better and slowly established a 15 shot advantage in the first 10 ends. At this stage the Falls rink skipped by R Gilbert held a 18-6 lead which was the difference in the game.
There was nothing in the other three rinks but gradually G Kearney came back into his game and eventually would draw 21-21. This left the other 3 rinks to battle it out for the title.
On rink 1 President Brendan McCloskey was skipping his four well and at the midpoint held a slim lead over D Kerr. While he would win by 19-15 the Mossley boys would have been happy to keep the margin to 4 shots.
On rink 3 Mossley always held the upper hand in a low scoring encounter. Sam Salters was 13-8 up after 10 ends and despite a Falls fight back held on to beat K Brennan 19-17.
The decisive action for Mossley was taking place on rink 4 where Davy Thompson was taking on J McCallum. Some super ends were being played with both skips changing the head with bowl after bowl. At 10 ends it was Thompson who held a slim 12-11 lead but over the second half of the game his rink was to dominate the scoring on way to a 27-15 victory. This would prove to be the difference in the game and to take the trophy to Mossley.
President Sam Cunningham presented the trophies and congratulated both teams on a fine contest well supported by both clubs. He also thanked the host club, sponsors and umpire.
Next up will be the Junior Final between Falls and Comber at Pickie BC next Thursday the 16th August.
