The championship draws as always produced a number of intriguing encounters in the opening games. Just some of the many which caught the eye….
Singles holder M McPeak (Belmont) heads to J Newell (Ards) while at Old Bleach, PGL President M Nutt plays A Morrison (Ballymena) and N Mulholland entertains M Trainor (Dunbarton) in what might be the tie of the round.
Pairs holders Nutt / Kirkwood (O Bleach) have an interesting opening tie against club mates Trimble / Trimble. That evening also sees Rainey / Booth entertain McKee / Kyle (Larne) while Ballymena hosts the first of two clashes between A Duncan and S Coleman. These combinations also play in the Triples with the holders Duncan / Torrington / Duncan at least having “Home” advantage for their first defence of the title won last season at Forth River.
Another good looking triples tie sees A McLean (Larne) v DJ Wilson (Dunbarton).
Robin Horner begins his Fours defence v S Gourley (Hilden) with N Mulholland v M Trainor looking very tasty.
In the Senior Fours Horner’s holders play P Thompson (Falls) with last seasons runners up J Coulter (Ballymena) travelling to D McCloskey ( CI Knock).
Youth Singles holder A McKeown ( Mossley) begins his defence v C O’Neill at Cliftonville. With S Shields ( Ballymena) having moved to Scotland there will be no defender of the Junior title. Tie of round in that discipline sees J Moffett (Dunbarton) host D Atkinson (Belmont) in what should be a cracker.
I wish everyone all the best and good bowling for the Centenary season championships.
