Bryan Magrath

Bryan McGrath

The NIPGL has this page in memory of our esteemed colleague Bryan Magrath who sadly passed away at the start of the 2015 season.

Bryan dragged bowls into the 21st century when he started reporting the league table and results on the Ballymena Bowls website at a time when players relied on the local press, including the now defunct Ireland Saturday Night, to keep up to date with what was going on in the league. As the years went on Bryan added more and more information, his website bryansbowls was officially recognised by the NIPGL and Bryan was appointed the first ever Public Relations Officer of the NIPGL.

By now Bryan was reporting the IBA and PG Cup draws and then added to his workload by including the PG Championship draws. This was a great undertaking, but players were delighted as they now had access to the draws online and quicker then in previous times. Bryan never stood still however. Despite the already significant workload of keeping all the results and draws updated, he started a weekly Points Of View, which an entertaining read most weeks and Bryan didn't shy away from speaking his mind on some controversial issues. As part of the General Purposes Committee Bryan was always looking out for the best of the PG and was usually at the front looking for reform in matters that he thought would help grow the game.

Despite all his hard work off the green, Bryan was also a very committed and more than capable bowler. He won PG Pairs and Triples titles and in 2014 he was the inspiration behind Old Bleach winning the IBA Senior Cup for the first time.
